Happy 2nd Birthday C: An open letter

To my darling C,

You are 2 years old today so I wanted to mark this special day by writing you a personal letter (as I did for you last year too), which will mean much more to you when you are older, and to mark the milestones of this past year.

Your personality hasn’t stopped developing – you’ve turned into the family clown, making us laugh constantly with your silly facial expressions and general craziness. This video from our holiday at Mamie’s this summer just about sums up life with you:

I never thought it possible, but this past year you have become even closer to your big sister. People kept telling me that this wouldn’t last, that L would get bored of you after a while or would get annoyed when you started playing with her toys, but it just hasn’t been the case. I love watching your relationship develop, and seeing how much you mean to each other.

Sisterly hugs in May this year

It is brilliant watching you absorb everything your big sister does, even if the copying does scare the hell out of me sometimes – why do my kids have to be such daredevil climbers and gymnasts?!? (Although watching you attempt your sister’s handstands which look like you’re doing downward dog is just hilarious!)

You look less like L every day, where you once looked like twins at the same age, and strangely it looks like you’re going to have your dad’s straight hair instead of your mum’s and sister’s curly locks! Count yourself very lucky in that case 😉

We are loving hearing you start to talk, and sing. My biggest heart-melt at the moment is when you say “merci Maman” or “bye-bye Papa”. For several months now you’ve been obsessed with French words beginning with “ch” and your favourites are still “chat”, “chien” and “chaussure”, which goes well with your shoe obsession! However we are finally moving into words that start with other letters, and “lapin” is the latest word that we have on repeat.

As for singing you’ll happily do the actions to “Ainsi font font font” but you never sing along, however you will now happily sing bits of “Twinkle twinkle little star” and “Baa baa black sheep”. Even if your version makes this Franglaise Family laugh, as you sing “Baa baa bakchich” (bakchich means bribe or something similar in French).

It has to be said that the “terrible twos” started with a vengeance several months ago, with extreme tantrums if you couldn’t open something or if the slightest toy didn’t work in the way you wanted it to. Fortunately as we’ve already been through that once with L it’s really not too bad, even if it does make us laugh at times. Sorry!

I love how cuddly and kissy you are. We are a very demonstrative family, we say “I love you” to each other many times a day and do lots of hugging and kissing, so it’s great that you are like this too. Even if it is your way of prolonging bedtime – leaning in for one more kiss, then one more, or of getting out of trouble – the “sorry” cuddle.

Loving my cuddles with my girls 🙂

We spent 6 years as a family with just one child and it’s really hard to imagine life without you now, you are such an integral part of our family. You might be the second child but we love you like crazy, just as we do your big sister, and I really can’t believe that it’s been since 2 years already since you joined us.

Thank you for being you, for making me  laugh when it’s cold and grey and miserable outside, for lighting up my life every day and for being (along with your sister) the best daughter any parents could ask for.

All my love on your special day today and every other day,
Mummy xxxxxxxxx

This is such a lovely thing to do, Sophie! I would never have thought of doing anything like it. She will love it when she gets older. She seems full of fun and that laughter in the video is communicative (great name, too!). x

I started it last year with her 1st birthday, and did L’s 7th birthday too. I hope they do like it and come back to read them over the years….She is such a funny thing, her nicknames are clown & petite folle – glad you like the name (it snuck in on the video!) it took us a long time to choose x

  4. Such a beautiful, heartfelt post and a wonderful keepsake for you all! I didn’t realise that she was born only one day before my Little Man – how did I not know this? (Or perhaps I did… *brainache*). Happy happy birthday to your little angel – we MUST get them together at some point! x x

Belated birthday wishes to your gorgeous C. Our daughers are days apart. Mine turned two on the 14th but I’m lagging on the blogposts these days.

Thank you 🙂 It took a lot for me to write this blog post as I’m running behind on so much these days. Now I need to find time to write the 8 year version for her big sister in a few weeks’ time. Happy belated birthday to yours for the 14th! x
