I actually went out. For a date night.

Hubs and I used to go out once a week. We were so smug. We had a child yet we still managed to frequently go out for a date night. To the cinema, out for dinner, for a stroll around the tourist attractions of London if the weather was good. We didn’t question it. It was FAB!

We were able to do it because when we moved to the UK the most cost effective childcare we could find for our (then) nearly 4 year old was an au pair.Β One of the upsides to having an au pair is you get a built in babysitter, and we took full advantage of this.

Then last summer our fab German au pair returned to Germany, I went on maternity leave, and nights out became few and far between. Our last date night out was in October, a few weeks before C was born. 8 months ago. We have not been out together, just the two of us for 8 months.

Then a few months ago one of our lovely mummy neighbours suggested setting up an old school babysitting circle on our road – there are about a zillion kids across the 70-odd houses in our street – and we jumped at the chance of joining this as babysitters in London often charge as much as Β£10 an hour! So Saturday night was our first night out, just the two of us, thanks to our retro babysitting circle.

We had to have a photo taken of this rare event. Our night out wasn’t anything special, a so-so restaurant that we’d never been to before a couple of tube stops away, but that didn’t matter. We got dressed up, we chatted, we ate, we drank, and we reconnected. It was AMAZING!

In our absence the girls were pretty well behaved for our babysitter/neighbour. Baby C woke up crying at one point, but as L informed me the next day “I told her a story that was in my head, then she stopped crying, then she started playing in her cot and then she fell back to sleep”.

There’s a lot to be said for having them share a room:

Their beds couldn't be any closer!

Now the babysitting circle is up and running here’s hoping it’s not another 8 months before we get to have a date night out again.

I’m linking up to Magic Moments over at The Oliver’s Madhouse for the first time, as Saturday night really was a magic moment for us. If you want to see other magic moments just click on the linky below:

Good luck!! It took me 5 months after z was born for us to have a date night. I was so excited I felt like a teenager. Now we make a point of going out together at least once a month. We sometimes don’t manage it but its a lot better than it used to be! So sweet of L to tell Baby C a story πŸ™‚

It’s hard to find the time, isn’t it? But I’m hoping to make it a common occurrence now. I love the way our two little girls get on so well πŸ™‚
