What does old mean to me?

This week’s Gallery theme over at Sticky FingersΒ is “Old”. When I first read that the first thing I thought was “how I feel now”. At 36 weeks pregnant and a lot less mobile than I usually am, I feel very old and creaky, but I didn’t think that would make an attractive gallery photo, so I carried on thinking. I thought of all the old people in my life, both past and present, and that got me to thinking of old things in my life, and there aren’t that many as neither hubs nor I are particularly into antiques and don’t really have any family heirlooms.

This train of thought took me to an old thing of sentimental value, and that’s what my post on today’s Gallery is of.

Me wearing my grandmother’s bridal head dress on our wedding day.

When B and I announced to my paternal grandad that we were getting married, my grandad asked me if I would like to wear my late grandmother’s wedding head dress, and I jumped at the chance of wearing a piece of family history on our special day. So before I had looked at any dresses or had any idea of what style of bride I wanted to be I already had my “tiara”.

It is a really beautiful piece of art and quite incredible when you think it was sourced during the war for their wedding in 1941.

(I had hoped to put a photo in here of my Granny wearing it on their wedding day, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to find one in time. If I do manage to get hold of one I will add it in here later.)

This is my “Old” post and was written as a link-up to The Gallery on the Sticky Fingers blog, where you can find lots more photos around the theme “Old”.

How wonderful that you wore a piece of family history on your wedding day. That’s so precious. And it is really beautiful. A family heirloom is a great legacy to pass on x

  2. That really is a beautiful piece of jewellery. It looks stunning. I wore my mothers pearls (she passed away, sadly) on my wedding day. I really felt that she was with me. I hope you treasure your heirloom and your memories of her.

Jenny – I really loved that fact too and I often wonder whether L might want to wear it if she gets married one day…

Helen – It is really quite something and I feel privileged to have been able to wear it. That is so sad about your mum but how lovely you were able to wear her pearls and feel close to her that way.

Oh my, what a wonderful thing to be able to say that your wedding tiara was your grandmothers and made in the 1940’s! It looks stunning. Please do post a picture of your grandmother wearing it if you can find one that will be just lovely! I love family traditions like this, maybe one day your daughter could also wear it?

Oh wow, you are utterly stunning, what a head piece-wow. Gorgeous, gorgeous couple. Would love you to do a wedding post. I did one on our anniversary x

Ah thanks! It’s amazing what youth and a professional make-up artist can do πŸ˜‰ And it does help when the groom is pretty gorgeous too! I nearly did a wedding post on our anniversary this year, but did one on anniversaries instead. Next year maybe I’ll do one on our wedding itself, to celebrate it being 10 years since the big day!!
